George Weeden, who died on August 16, 1870. He’s buried in Elmwood Cemetery in DeKalb, Illinois, and the carving on the stone was what caught my eye right away. The broken branch is something I’ve read about in my symbolism books, but this was the first time I’d seen it so clearly depicted on a stone.
I found George Weeden in the 1870 census, where it noted that he was a 62 year-old brickmason, married to Sarah (age 58). You can see Sarah’s marker slightly behind and to the left of George.
I also found both of them in the 1860 census, where his occupation is listed as a mason (and Sarah is also listed).
